Who we are

Ayazamana is a not-for-profit dance organization registered in the State of New York and our mission is to promote Ecuadorian culture in the USA and teach the new generations about our customs and traditions.

Ayazamana is divided into two dance groups. One group is comprised of individuals who are fifteen years of age and older and they are available for presentations throughout the year. The other group is comprised of children between the ages of six and fourteen and they meet once a week to learn the basics of Ecuadorian dance.

Why we exist

There is a large population of Ecuadorians and their descendents living in the Unites States. There is also great interest from other communities and different institutions to learn about our culture. Ayazamana was created with the objective of allowing these individuals and institutions to have greater access to our culture through our dances so they can learn more about Ecuador and appreciate the richness and diversity that exists within its borders.

We are available for all types of performances

We are a dance company ready and able to do educational and entertaining performances ranging from five minutes up to an hour or more. We perform dances from the different regions of Ecuador with authentic music and costumes, and we provide explanations of the cultural aspects of each dance. We also give the audience the opportunity to partake in our performance since dancing in Ecuador is an inclusive, community activity. Our performances can be done with music on Compact Disc or we can provide live musicians to accompany us.

Our Artistic Director

Mr. Jose Rivera was born in Quito, Ecuador and began to dance at the age of fifteen with Ms. Virginia Rosero, a well known Ecuadorian choreographer and dancer. Being a part of Ms. Rosero’s folkloric dance group allowed him to learn the fundamentals of Ecuadorian dances and allowed him to perform in various stages throughout Ecuador and abroad.

Like many other Ecuadorians seeking better opportunities, Mr. Rivera arrived in the United States in 1990 and settled in the city of New York. His love and appreciation for Ecuadorian folkloric dance motivated him to seek and participate in several dance groups in the tri-state area. In 1992, with the help of several close friends, he formed his own group with the name of Ayazamana. In May of 2008 he teamed up with Mr. Justo Santos and Mr. Esau Chauca to broaden the mission of the dance group and include dance clases for children. They incorpated the group in the state of New York under the name of Nukanchik Sapi-Ayazamana in April of 2009.
